Love your images
Wardrobe plays a huge role in creating family photos you’ll cherish forever. If you don’t love what you’re wearing, you won’t love your photos—it’s that simple! The right outfit can boost your confidence, help you feel comfortable, and ensure the focus stays on the emotions and connections captured in the moment.
Choosing the right outfits for your session can feel overwhelming, but don't worry—I'm here to guide you every step of the way! My goal is to ensure you and your family not only look amazing on session day but also feel relaxed and confident. Your wardrobe plays a key role in how your photos turn out. After all, if you don't love what you're wearing, it can affect how you feel about the final images. So let's dive in and make sure you're absolutely thrilled with your looks!
It's Fall y'all
Choosing colors that complement your family and the setting is just as important as selecting items that flatter your body type. Neutral tones, soft pastels, or coordinated pops of color can create a timeless look that keeps your photos cohesive and visually stunning. Flattering silhouettes and thoughtfully layered textures add depth and dimension, helping everyone look and feel their best.
By taking time to plan your wardrobe, you’ll set the tone for photos you’ll be proud to display for years to come. Let's work together to make your family photos unforgettable!
Neutrals are key
Neutrals are a timeless choice for professional photos because they complement any setting and keep the focus on you. A neutral color palette—think shades like beige, cream, taupe, and soft grays—creates a clean, cohesive look that won’t overpower the images. Avoid stripes, checks, or small, busy patterns, as they can be distracting on camera. Florals can work well, but make sure the pattern is large enough to be visible. If you choose a print, let its colors guide the rest of your outfit choices to maintain a balanced look.
Ladies
For women, flowy dresses are ideal—they not only create gorgeous movement in photos but also provide the most comfort during your session. While jeans or leggings can feel restrictive, pairing them with a top that has some flow can balance out the look. I also have a client wardrobe with a variety of sizes for you to choose from. If nothing catches your eye, we can shop together to find the perfect outfit. And if it’s something you wouldn’t typically wear for a date night, I’m happy to purchase it and add it to my client wardrobe for future use!
babies and kids
I've got you covered with wardrobe options from newborn up to age twelve. However, if you have something specific in mind or want to shop for your little ones, I’m happy to guide you in selecting the perfect pieces! The same guidelines apply—flowy dresses are ideal for girls who can walk, all the way up to teens, as they add beautiful movement to photos. For boys, sticking with neutral colors is always a win, and I recommend avoiding bright colors if possible to keep the look soft and timeless.
Spouses and other family members
Styling this group is usually simpler! Avoid thin lines, small checkered patterns, logos (even small ones), and bright or neon colors, as they don't photograph well.
For men, a button-up shirt with rolled sleeves strikes the perfect balance between casual and polished. Solid neutral colors are always a great choice. You can also opt for a short-sleeve polo or a Henley—both work well in neutral tones.
When it comes to bottoms, denim or slightly more formal pants are ideal unless you're going for a more dressed-up look. Dress pants aren’t necessary unless your session calls for it!
consider your location
When planning your wardrobe, it’s essential to consider the location, season, and surroundings. For fall sessions, warmer tones like honey, burgundy, and earthy neutrals work beautifully. In spring, opt for softer, cooler tones like mint, soft peach, and light colors. Winter calls for rich blues and neutrals, while summer can handle bolder, brighter hues.
If we’re shooting in a wooded area, jewel tones always shine against natural backdrops. In more urban settings, denim, black, and gray tones create a sleek, polished look. Once you have a general idea of what you want to wear, I’ll review your options to make sure everything works well on camera, as some outfits that look great in person may not photograph as well.
In the Studio
For studio sessions, keeping it neutral and soft is key. Pastel tones and earth tones work beautifully in controlled lighting environments, ensuring a clean and timeless look. Think shades like soft blush, light gray, beige, cream, or muted blues. These colors help keep the focus on you and create a serene, polished aesthetic. Avoid bold prints or overly bright colors that might overpower the simplicity of a studio setting. I’m happy to help you coordinate the perfect look!
